Shushu Crevoshay and Nistha Lohani created the ESG Analyst Program in 2021 to give undergraduate students in the Columbia community a chance to gain a profound understanding of ESG in the financial sector. They were motivated to create the program by their desire to make an impact in the world. With a deep interest in finance, Nistha felt the industry wasn’t doing enough to remedy the world’s issues despite its power. Coming from a nonprofit and liberal arts background, Shushu recognized that small initiatives were not going to cut it anymore - big industries were going to have to join the battle to make the world a better place. Thankfully, at the same time that Nistha and Shushu began having these conversations, Environmental, Social, and Governance strategies started to make their way into the investment space so all kinds of investors could be more cognizant of where they were putting their money. However, the nuance of the industry made it difficult to understand and even harder to apply. That is when Nistha and Shushu decided to come together to create the analyst program. The goal is to teach students about ESG integration into fundamental financial valuation from the ground up. We start from the basics because everyone should be involved in conscious investing but not everyone comes from the same background - like Nistha and Shushu. That’s why we invite students from all educational backgrounds and interests to apply to the program. If we can’t come together, how can we make an impact?
